When Ludwig would back off the throttle in turns, oil and unburnt fuel would acumulate in the turbo system momentarily. They ran both 2.3 and 2.5L versions of the engine as I recall, both equiped with special components (cylinder heads, blocks?) out of Europe. It was putting out somewhere near 550HP with a very large turbo boost. I also saw the Mustang GTP car driven by Klaus Ludwig of Germany race on several tracks. As they say on the web site of the Roush Museum ( ), "Legend has it that the cars were so unbeatable with the 2500cc 4 cyl turbocharged motors that the rules were re-written to get rid of them." Photos of one of these vehicles, the Roush Merkur XR4Ti, is attached. They can be very impressive and produce incredable amounts of power. I had the experience of witnessing some of the turbocharged 2.3L engines on the race track in the 1980s. ![]()
